Spectrum

Spectrum (2022) is an interactive lighting installation permanently installed in the entrance foyer to the Amelia building in Royal Tunbridge Wells.

James Tunnard Studio was commissioned by Tunbridge Wells Council to design a bold lighting centrepiece for the entrance hall of the newly refurbished Amelia Scott Building.

Inspired by the stained glass window in the original building James investigated the scientific principles of light and colour. Sir Issac Newton's invention of the colour wheel; the concept of a continuous circular spectrum to describe the range of coloured light contained within daylight - became the inspiration for Spectrum.

The resulting design is composed of 36 panels of coloured glass that combine to form a circular spectrum of colour. Changing light conditions throughout the day cast coloured shadows and reflections. In the evening LED lighting within each glass panel is sequenced to generate undulating patterns of colour and illumination.
